Adding -ful to words (shorty)

She fixes then varnishes old wooden boxes then drinks two glasses of wine while she watches some quizzes on TV.

In this revision lesson, we're looking at the adding -es to the end of words rule, and it's one of the easiest rules to remember and use.

Can you remember which end letters we add -es to to make plurals and third person verbs? Look at the sentence above to remind you.

Add -es to words ending in s, ss, sh, ch, x, z  to make plurals and third person verbs (he she it)

 I have 3 watches. (plural)

She/He/It watches TV every morning. (Third person verb)

bus — buses

atlas — atlases

gas — gases

address — addresses

business — businesses

wash — washes

varnish — varnishes

bench — benches

peach — peaches

box — boxes

fox — foxes

fix — fixes

waltz — waltzes

buzz — buzzes

quiz — quizzes  (Notice quizzes also has the 1:1:1 doubling up rule remember that lesson?)

But like all spelling rules there are always exceptions to the rule.

If the -ch ending is pronounced with a "k" sound, you add -s not -es:

stomach — stomachs

epoch — epochs
