The 'alot' mistake is a classic mistake and can easily be learnt. There is also the phrase 'a lot of' which people make mistakes with. Check out my a lot of /lots of lesson.
But the past/passed homophone mistake is harder to get your head round.
Past time. In the past. The past is the past. Also verb + past in movement - I walked past him. They ran past the house. He looked right past me.
passed is the past tense of pass - I passed my exam, He passed the ball, they passed, I've passed, He's passed it as a footballer, She passed away last week.
